Mikhail Afanasevich Bulgakov (1891-1940) was called "Gogol ofthe20th century".He was a famous nove and play writer in early20thcentury of the Soviet Union. He was famous for the novel"The Masterand Margarita", which spend12years to creat. The novel was bornunder the background of Russia Soviet Socialist realism, so his workswere not able to published for26years since borned. Once the novelwas published,it aroused a huge concern of scholars and critics,forit’s unique character,special writing features and varieties of themes.It was called as myth novel, sentimental novel, religious teachings,legendary novels, even the metafiction.And it had set off three timesof research booms and caused a big influence around the world..Andfinally it became a classic of20th century.This thesis mainly use Bakhtin’s polyphonic novel theory toanalysis the polyphonic features of the Master and Margaret.Polyphonic novel theory emphasizes independent will of thecharacters, which requires the equal status between author and theprotagonist, equal dialogue of different ideology,para-position of thestructure and image-building, and eventually make the novel text fullof uncertainty and unresolved.The thesis consists of fiveparts:introduction,dialogism, para-position, unfinalizability and theepilogue.The introduction part mainly introduces the Bulgakov and his works,the research status of the Master and Margaret at homeand abroad, the purpose and significance of this paper,and thetheories and methods it based on.The dialogism part devides intothree parts: the dialogue between the author and the protagonist, theprotagonists’ self-talk and the carnival of multi-voice.They reveal theauthor’s novel conception of take all ideological trends intoconversation, make their existence and development in theconversation.The third part is para-position, demonstrates the novelplot lines and image-building’s para-position to highlight thepolyphonic features of the novel. The fourth part is unfinalizability,through the character development and changing of time and space toreveals the unfinished and unresolved character of polyphonic novel,make the novel with endless tension.Epilogue part summarized themain content of this thesis, highlight the polyphonic features of thenovel, and the real intention of the author which hidden in thepolyphony text.This research expounds on the Polyphonic characteristics of TheMaster and Margaret with the use of text analysis, socialpsychological analysis and comparative analysis. The thesis try todiscover the exploration of Bulgakov’s novel conception,and hisadhere to himself and the art itself,and even the thought of the SovietUnion and the entire human societ.
