The thesis is a report on the translation of a few chapters of an English textbook. The source language text is part of Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics translated by the author of this paper. The book is composed by Kevin D. Hoover, a professor of the School of Economics at Duke University. Selecting Chapter8and part of Chapter7, which the author has translated as the analysis object, the author will analyze the translation strategies in the light of the theory of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation and the classification of text types.Three problems have hindered the translation process. First is the accurate understanding. Second is the accurate expression of text especially of long sentences. Third, the rendering of economics terms. Generally, textbooks belong to the category of non-literary works."Readers’evaluation on non-literary works relies more heavily on the level of scientific truth and utility function...so the translation should reflect the objective facts so as to achieve its functional purpose"(Li Changshuan,2004:25). According to Peter Newmark’s classification of texts, textbooks belong to the informative text. He who also proposed semantic translation and communicative translation believes literary texts are semantic translation oriented while informative texts are communicative translation oriented. Consequently, the author will analyze the text from the perspective of communicative translation theory in the paper. The paper is composed of four chapters altogether. Chapter1is an introduction, and chapter2presents an introduction to the original text. Chapter3is the quality control that applies communicative translation theory to the render problems during the translation. Chapter4is the conclusion.
