With the coming of technological economy, information technology and globalization, the way of people’s living and study have greatly changed, which puts a higher demand for the training of personnel. The traditional teaching method is hard to meet the learners’ needs. Problem-based learning is a new teaching model based on the theory of constructivism. It is thought as the most eye-catching innovation in the academic world at home and abroad. It is a kind of student-centered instructional approach and students are inspired to gain deeper knowledge by their individual work or collaboration using the learning resources. This learning model reflects students’ autonomy to the greatest degree, cultivating their ability of problem finding, asking and problem solving.This paper intends to do a tentative research on the application of PBL in non-English major College students using the results to improve students’ comprehensive ability, strengthen their autonomous learning ability, change their rigid way of thinking and improve the teaching quality. The whole research is completed by means of questionnaire and interview in non-English major students of Anhui Sanlian College. The experiment is conducted among70first year students of Finical Management major. The experiment lasted for2years and the researcher was their English teacher during the2years. In order to ensure the quality, the researcher choose two even classes of the same major, one class was set as an experiment group (EG), the other class was set as a control group (CG). During the two years of research, EG was taught in PBL teaching model and CG was taught in traditional teaching model. Four semesters later, we can get the results of the experiment. PBL is an effective teaching model, it can help students to find their enthusiasm for learning English, cultivate their learning interest, develop their team-work spirit and collaborative learning competence. The most important is that PBL can not only create an ideal language learning environment for learners but also provide them a real atmosphere to use language and construct new knowledge, which reflects "learning by doing" to a great extent. The Innovation of this thesis lies in the application of PBL teaching method in private application-orientation undergraduate universities. It accumulates lots of experimental data and valuable experience, tries bravely reforming English teaching in Anhui Sanlian College, and provides beneficial reference for the reforms of teaching of English and other relevant courses in other application-orientation undergraduate universities.This experiment proves that PBL helps to stimulate students’ interest in learning, correct their learning attitude and learning motivation. Therefore the current state of the College English teaching, time consuming with low efficiency, will be changed and finally the teaching effect will also be improved.
