Songs arranged from Chinese ancient poetry (The poetry-song) is a combination of the classical poems and songs with unique art features of graceful lyrics and harmonious rhyme. And all the lyrics are derived from the classical poetry. The author tries to explore the style and mood that should be grasped in singing as well as their special language characteristics by studying the development and metrical patterns of the poetry-song. The thesis is divided into three chapters, which could be briefly summarized as follows:The first chapter sketched the poetry-song, which introduces changes of their style and the diversity of techniques in different dynasties since The "Book of Songs", the first anthology of verse in China came out from several aspects:their origin, development and classification. The second chapter is the main content of the thesis, which focuses on the discussion of language characteristics of poetry-song. It not only elaborates the special language features of ancient poetry, such as ancient pronunciation difference of Chinese characters, the unique phonology, but also analyzes and summarizes the language characteristics of songs including their rhyme and melody. In short, the interaction of the above two different language characteristics brings forth the unique style and charm of the poetry-song.The third chapter discusses how to grasp the language characteristics of the poetry-song in singing. Two concepts are proposed, namely,"regarding the singer as the poet" and "regarding the singer as musician and writer". The above concepts bridge a close bond between singing and the poetry-song, which further makes it possible for singers to sing the poetry-song with more perfect artistic effect. |
