Classical Chinese poetry and the literary form which developed from it, known as Ci, played a significant role in China’s long musical history. These genres went through many stages of development throughout the changing dynasties, reaching a peak during the Song Dynasty. Most Chinese are familiar with masterpieces from this era which are performed by highly trained singers using a very specialised singing technique.This essay gives an account of the development of Song Ci and describes in detail the particular characteristics of Ci which led to the development of this specialised singing technique, devised specifically for the performance of these works.Professor Sufen Wang, the one of greatest expert on contemporary classical poetry melodies and songs, made a tremendous process on development of ancient melodies.
