Versatile, noble and talented, Su Shi excelled in poetry,calligraphy and drawing. In terms of Su Shi’s poetry and calligraphy, they notonly created a new period of poetry and calligraphy in Song dynasty, but alsoset a model for the following poets and calligraphers.As an upright man, Su Shi’s life was full of twists and turns. His poems areextensive in topic and various in style while his calligraphy is full, forceful andtotally natural. As the two means of expressing himself, Su Shi’s poetry andcalligraphy are similar in development, idea and creation. First, thedevelopment and formation of Su Shi’s poetry and calligraphy can beattributed to his hard work in studying poetry, practicing calligraphy by thepool, eclecticism and uprightness. Second, Su Shi’s poetry and calligraphystress the expression of personal feeling and subject, reflected in “Words comefrom my heart” and “Calligraphy is valued by its meaning.” respectively.Correspondingly, Su Shi’s poetry and calligraphy rest upon the two expressingmethods---“not limited by the form” and “beyond the calligraphy”,representing his view in creating poetry and calligraphy. Third, Su Shi’s poetrycreation, influenced by essays, is unique in style; Su Shi’s calligraphy is noveland free. Su Shi’s poetry and calligraphy together had started a new period.
