Chinese traditional calligraphy in Malaysia has undergone more than a hundred years of transformation from transplantation to rooting.Under the influence of Chinese ethnicity,Chinese calligraphy has been sustained in the Chinese cultural identity. After Malaysia's independence,in the political and cultural environment of Malay supremacy, calligraphy was coded as a symbol of ethnic culture by the Chinese community due to its distinct Chinese cultural color, which gradually became prosperous with the general concern of the Chinese community. However, under the mainstream discourse of "inheriting Chinese culture",the coded Chinese calligraphy has become a tool of cultural salvation, contributing to the formation of a cultural calligraphy idea with the core idea of Chinese cultural inheritance. This has resulted in the circumstance of writing behavior more important than calligraphy itself. This study mainly investigates the speech and thought which related to Chinese calligraphy from the Chinese calligraphy organizations,Chinese calligraphers and culturalists in Malaysia.Through the analysis of the speech and thought associating with the academic research achievements in Malaysian Chinese cultural identity, political development,Chinese education and Chinese calligraphy, the study reveals the factors that generated the idea of Malaysian Chinese calligraphy after independence of nation. In the meanwhile, this study intents to make the Malaysian calligraphy circle realize that, the developing tendency of Malaysian Chinese calligraphy is presently flourishing in appearance ensued from the rise of cultural movement of Chinese traditions, but in reality,it is confined to the cognitive level of "cultural inheritance".The development of Chinese calligraphy is consequently addicted to the horizontal promotion of "quantity",hence disregarding the vertical and deep cultivation of "quality".Hence, this causes the stagnation of Malaysian Chinese calligraphy development despite the years.
