Traditional subtitle translation theory and thinking set of most people indicate that subtitle involves written mode, namely screen subtitle and the translation text of the target language only. However, with the emergence of new media and diversification of forms of information, styles of discourse are not only a single text-modal any more, at the same time, multi-modal forms of sound, image, animation; color, etc. have been of great importance. Films make fully use of the language, auditory and visual modes to communicate, through language, images, sounds and other means and symbol resources. However, the traditional film subtitles researches is limited to the language itself, which focus only on the subtitle (language) role, but have ignored the significance of the role of the other modes and semiotic resources, such as visual images and sounds, In1990s, with the theory of multimodal discourse analysis which rose of the West largely broke through the limitations of traditional film and television studies, thus providing a more comprehensive perspective. Consequently, this paper aims to analyze the multi-modal discourse analysis theory and framework, as well as how it plays a role in subtitle translation.Based on this construction, I will develop the analysis from three aspects mainly: Firstly, with the description and comparative analysis of traditional subtitle theory and practice, to sum up the traditional researches of subtitle studies and translation functions, and its limitation, thus to point out the new perspective----Multimodal Discourse Analysis theory, and to make a thorough study of this new theory. To introduce how this theory does rationally integrates functions of various modes of language, images, sounds, etc., and to study the coordination of different modes, thus provide a theoretical framework from the whole meaning. Through elaborate introduction of the new theoretical framework, it effectively solves the limitation of traditional study of subtitle translation which focused on subtitle language level only. I will make the analysis of different modes of discourse analysis synergy and how to express the whole meaning of synergy; relations between the different modes and how they affect the subtitle translation.Furthermore, under the Multimodal Discourse Analysis theory, I will analyze some audio-visual products, such as The Hotel Hell and other case studies. Using qualitative method to discuss how subtitles as language(subtitle), pictures(scene、facial expression, etc) and sounds(background music, etc.)and many other multi-modal discourses combined together. And how do different aspects express the overall meaning. Then I’d like to analyze how to get the optimization of the subtitles and other modes, thus to achieve the best effect of subtitle translation.Last but not the least, combining with my subtitle translation experience, I will try to put forward a few suggestions accordingly, including simplification, double line subtitle method, reduction method, omission and differences between sentence pattern and other practical subtitle translation methods. At the same time, with the practical subtitle translation experience, I’d like to summarize some thoughts and inspiration in subtitle translation.
