The Subtitle Translation Of Movie From The Perspective Of Multimodal Discourse Analysis

Mankind has entered the era of multimedia, so the language as a mono-modal formhas been unable to fully express the meaning of communication. Thus we need some othermodals to enhance, in order to fully express the meaning and reach the aim of communication,such as sound, visual image, color and so on. Thus the term Multimodality aroused linguist’sinterest and attention. They conducted a lot of research and exploration in MultimodalDiscourse Analysis. Multimodal Discourse Analysis is based on Halliday’s systemicfunctional linguistics as the foundation, Professor Zhang Delu points out that theMultimodal Discourse is a phenomenon which means use auditory、visual、tactile and othersensory and communicate through language、image、 sound、 movement and other symbolicresources. Martin points out that Multimodal Discourse Analysis is composed of five levels,they are:(1) cultural level(2) context level (3) significance level (4) form level (5) media levelBy discussing the combination between the subtitle translation of “Harry Potter and theHalf Blood Prince” and Multimodal, the thesis is to analyze that how does the MultimodalDiscourse Analysis affect the subtitle translation of movies. The thesis is based on theMultimodal Discourse Analysis theory as the foundation, aims to analyze the following threeareas under the theoretical framework of Multimodal Discourse Analysis:1. The embodimentof Multimodality in the film “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince”, then aims to analyzehow does the subtitle and Multimodality combining to constructed the whole meaning underthe theoretical framework of Multimodal Discourse Analysis.2. The second goal is to discussthe relationship between the movie’s subtitles and other modals, and the relationship betweendifferent modals.3. By discussing the analysis of the movie subtitle expression function in theprocess of overall significance, attempts to put forward some suggestions on themovie subtitle translation.In this paper, I will firstly summarize the research status in home and abroad ofMultimodal Discourse Analysis theory, including the discussion of basic concepts、theoretical framework、 analysis methods and theoretical application in variousfields.Secondly, I will analyze the film translation theory; and summarize thecharacteristics and constraints of film subtitle translation, and then conclude the strategiesof it. Thirdly, I will analyze how does the translator using the subtitle translation to construct the whole meaning under the five levels of the theoretical framework of MultimodalDiscourse Analysis, by discussing the analysis of Multimodal Discourse Analysis, the thesisattempts to use the theory to analyze the film "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince", anddiscusses how does the subtitle translation and other modals combined to transfer the wholemeaning, such as pictures、 color and sound. Finally, by analyzing the relationshipbetween the subtitle translation and other modals, the thesis expects to put forward someadvices in subtitle translation. When the subtitle plays a key role, it should be translatedcompletely, under this circumstance, we could choose double-line subtitle, and we can addexplanations while translating in literal translation. When the subtitle plays a secondary role,we can choose common words and common phrases, we can also delete redundantinformation and use Arabic number or more idioms, and then repeat words or sentences couldbe omitted. Thus we can achieve the best subtitle translation effect through the strategies.
