With the increasingly accelerating globalization, the film and television works have already become a direct and effective way of cross-cultural communication. It can enrich and entertain people's daily life.Meanwhile,it plays an increasingly important role in promoting communication between different cultures as well.In recent years, with the further development of cross-cultural communication, especially with the popularity of many American and English films and television works, much attention and significance is given to subtitle translation.Subtitle translation of films and television works is not a simple process of two languages transformation. It is a complex process which involves many lingual and cultural aspects from source text to target text.Whether the subtitle translation is right or wrong, proper or not only directly influence audiences' feeling of seeing the films and television works, but also has a effect on if the cross-cultural can be carried out smoothly.Subtitle translation is a new translation genre which is different from other translation forms. It is demanding in the aspects of language appeals, logicality and artistic quality, etc.Compared with the simple literary translation,it is much more universal and popular.Although the translation history of China has a long history, the subtitle translation of films and television works hasn't been paid too much attention. At the present stage, the subtitle translation study of China just started a few years ago.Relevant theories and practices are far from being systematic and mature. Therefore, there still exist big flaws in many aspects related to the subtitle translation.Starting from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis and based on the corpus of subtitle translation of Zootopia, which is a very popular American movie released in2016,the present thesis tries to discuss the relationship between different modalities in the movie, and how the different modalities are combined to build the whole meaning with the help of integrated framework of multimodal discourse analysis by professor Zhang Delu. Then, the thesis analyzes the subtitle translation of Zootopia in culturallevel, contextual level, content level and expression level. In the end,the thesis draws a conclusion that the integrated framework of multimodal discourse analysis,as a new research angle, first,it properly combined different modalities, such as sounds, languages, visual images and etc.,which is able to convey the whole and complete meaning of the text.Second, the integrated framework of multimodal discourse analysis takes the cultural-social conditions of the target culture into consideration, which plays an advantageous role in subtitle translation.Thirdly,to a certain extent, the theory of integrated framework of multimodal discourse analysis surmounts the limitations of the cultural and linguistic dimensions of the traditional translation studies. That is,sounds, language, visual images are considered as an integrated discourse. In a word, the theory of multimodal discourse analysis provides a more comprehensive perspective for subtitle translation studies. It is expected that more and more translators could conduct subtitle translation studies from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis, breaking the restrictions of traditional studies of subtitle translation,in the hope of continuously developing and improving Chinese subtitle translation career.
