With the increasingly frequent social and cultural contacts and exchanges among different countries and nationalities, the phenomenon of language contact becomes far more universal and bilingual and multilingual users has considerably increased. In the daily communications of the bilingual and multilingual, it is bound to have the phenomenon of interactive use of two or more languages. Therefore, the linguistic phenomenon of code-switching is unavoidable in this language contact.Since1970s, the study of code-switching has attracted extensive consideration in multiple subjects, In the field of linguistics, there appeared four approaches to the study of code-switching:the approach of grammatical analysis, the approach of sociolinguistics, the approach of psycholinguistics and the approach of conversational analysis. These four different approaches have made great contributions to the study of code-switching. But so far, code-switching is still a hot topic in the field of linguistics. This study is attempting to combine the approach of sociolinguistics and pragmatics with new linguistic data for an in-depth study of code-switching. Specifically, the present thesis aims at researching on the influence of social variable-gender on the use of code-switching from the perspective of sociolinguistics and further analyzing motivations for male and female in their use of code-switching with the aid of Verschueren’s adaption theory and Yu Guodong’s adaption model. With the adoption of methods of quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, this thesis made detailed study of the phenomenon of code-switching on the basis of analysis on the data collected from the sitcom Ipartment in three aspects:firstly, it collected manifestations of code-switching conversations in the data and grouped them into ten categories according to functions of code-switching; secondly, based on the data collection and processing, it explored how the social variable-gender influences code-switching in use and explained this phenomenon from sociolinguistic perspective; thirdly, it moved on for further investigation of motivations for male and female in their use of code-switching in the data with Verschueren’s adaption theory and Yu Guodong’s adaption model systematically and comprehensively, which found that their motivations of using code-switching is for adapting to linguistic reality, social conventions and mental motivations. The findings of the research finally showed: the social variable-gender did have impact on code-switching in use in the following functions: under the functions of assuring social identity-gender identity, expressing a sense of humor and controlling turn-talking in the function of making injection, male performed more noticeably outstanding than female; under the functions of showing off language competence, shortening psychological distance, avoiding embarrassment and expressing exclamation in the function of making injection, female performed more prominently than male.By researching on the influence of social variable-gender on the use of code-switching and analyzing motivations for male and female in their use of code-switching based on the study of the data Ipartment, it is favorable for us to know about the psychological characteristics of male and female and help them acknowledge the use of code-switching in different situations and improve communicative quality to a large extent. In the mean time, the current study further proves the availability and applicability of Verschueren’s adaption theory and Yu Guodong’s adaption model in analyzing motivations of codeswitchers of male and female in using code-switching, which to some degree develops the application of this theory and shows a great value to deepen people’s understanding of the essence of...
