A Comparative Study Of Oral Interpretation And Sign Language Translation

Sign language is an independent visual language, which is an important tool for deaf people to communicate with the outside world. However, its status as a language has not been widely recognized until recent decades. People realize that sign language has its own grammar, syntax and sentence structure. In recent years, sign language interpreters can be seen on news reports, press conferences and various other occasions. Just like oral interpreters, sign language interpreters help people with different cultural backgrounds to communicate with each other. They have some common features and unique features respectively.From this thesis, we know that sign language is an independent language with its own grammar, syntax and other linguistic features. Both sign language interpretation and oral interpretation are activities that convert one language into another one. They are similar with each other in terms of interpreting strategy, model, required skills and so on. The research on sign language interpretation can draw experience from the existing theoretical and practical oral interpretation research achievements and we should integrate sign language interpretation research with oral interpretation research.
