| Chinese impromptu speeches usually have loose structure, redundant information and grammatical mistakes, which increases the burden of listening and analysis during simultaneous interpretation (abbreviated as SI). High delivery rate and dense information increases the burden of speech production, thus compromising the quality of interpretation. Clear and concise production helps interpreter save mental energy, facilitate listeners’ understanding and promote communication between the speaker and target-language listeners.Among the existing studies on impromptu speeches, most foreign studies center on semantic features and interpretation difficulties, but offer no solutions. There have been some domestic empirical studies on clear and concise production of a certain type of impromptu speech, but most studies in this regard take SI beginners as subjects. SI Professionals and comparative analysis between beginners and professionals are not involved. Therefore, both foreign and domestic studies have limitations. This thesis focuses on clear and concise production of impromptu speeches, and tries to compare the performance of beginners and professionals so as to provide reference to SI training and teaching.Through quantitative study and qualitative study, major findings of this thesis are:1) clear and concise production is an active choice of both beginners and professionals;2) clear and concise production promotes the quality of interpretation;3) omission, simplification and generalization are adopted by both beginners and professionals;4) beginners have no other choice but to omit sometimes, and tend to "faithfully" follow the words and structures of the source speech. Professionals, on the contrary, are more active and flexible in clear and concise production, and their interpretation enjoys higher quality. All in all, clear and concise production is a tactic proactively adopted by interpreters to promote communication between the speaker and listeners. |
