Study On Concision In Chinese-English Simultaneous Interpretation For Impromptu Speeches

In today's international conferences held in China,interpreters have to deal with Chinese impromptu speeches frequently.Impromptu speeches are hard to be anticipated because they are conceived on site,making them more difficult for interlpreters apart from the difficulties and stress of simultaneous interpretation(SI)itself.In addition,if the speaker keeps on talking very fast,to follow him/her and interpret every sentence precisely is almost impossible.In such cases,interpreters need to use tactics.The author puts forward that concision is an important tactic and studies the effect and application of it,in the hope that this thesis can be useful to SI learning and practice.This thesis is based on the framework of Daniel Gile's Effort Model.The author hopes to study Chinese-English(SI)for impromptu speeches and concision,and to explore how concision will help reduce main information losses and achieve information equivalence on the whole during the SI process,so as to improve the quality of interpretation.The author gives a review of the existing studies and classifies concision into three types:omission,generalization and simplification.An empirical study is also involved in this thesis.The author conducts an SI experiment and a questionnaire survey among SI students to observe the effect of concision on the quality of interpretation,and to study its application based on the subjects performance.According to the empirical study,the author concludes that concision is an effective tactic during Chinese-English SI for impromptu speeches.Omission,generalization and simplification are all applied in the process.Concision helps interpreters save energy and reduce main information losses.Therefore,to strengthen their consciousness and ability of concision,its better for SI learners to select more impromptu speeches for learning and practice.
