A Practice Report On Chinese Translation Of Passive Voice Of Equipment Descriptions In English Texts Of Science And Technology

This report mainly discusses the characteristics of the passive voice of equipment descriptions in English texts of science and technology as well as its Chinese translation methods through the analysis on examples from the English translation materials of science and technology in the appendix. As the English texts of science and technology try to pursue the objectivity and logicality, the use of passive voice is more frequent. However, to achieve the faithfulness and smoothness in English translation of science and technology, so that readers can understand very easily, the Chinese expression ways and grammatical features must be considered. Through the analysis of different characteristics between English and Chinese language structures, three Chinese translation methods are discussed, namely the translation in original order, reverse translation and translation without the subject. Some sentences can be done with only one translation method, but for relatively complex sentences, several translation methods may be used. Only through serious comparison of the difference between English and Chinese syntax, with the adoption of corresponding translation methods, the translated texts can be read naturally and smoothly, following the Chinese expression ways. This report summarizes translation methods of the passive voice of equipment descriptions in English texts of science and technology through the analysis of three translation methods above.
