The Application Of Functional Equivalence Theory In The Study On Passive Voice Translation In EST

As informative text,English for Science and Technology is objective in expression,and focuses on fidelity and accuracy of information.Therefore,passive voice is widely used in English for Science and Technology.The writing and translation of passive voice are thus of great significance in English for Science and Technology.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory is particularly suited to guide the translation practice of English for Science and Technology;however,there are rare researches on translating passive voice in English for Science and Technology under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory.In this paper,on the basis of Functional Equivalence Theory,according to the translation principle of Functional Equivalence Theory,which means to make every effort to achieve maximize equivalence between the original and the translation,combined with the translation practice of Ship Design&Construction(Chapter 18),translation skills of passive voice in English for Science and Technology are studied and summarized as follows:1)translated into Chinese sentences of passive voice;2)translated into Chinese sentences of active voice;3)translated into Chinese sentences with subject omitted;4)other translation ways.It is hoped that this paper can contribute to the study and practice of the translation of English for Science and Technology.
