Based on predecessors’research results,this paper focuses on studying theComparison of Chinese Modal Adverbs Ke and Cai by using the method ofcomparative analysis and replacement and mainly studies the similarities anddifferences of Ke and Cai in contextual meaning,syntactic and pragmaticfunctions.This article is composed of five parts:The First Chapter is the introduction part that mainly defines the researchobject,and introduces the reason of selecting this topic,the research ideas andmethods,the sources of materials and some other scholars’research.From Chapter Two to Chapter Four is the concrete parts:In Chapter Two,we described the differences of contextual meanings ofKe and Cai in four aspects:strengthening the affirmative and negativetones,emphasizing the degree and expressing the tone of retort.We also pointed outthe other two contextual meanings of Ke that Cai doesn’t have to strengthenimperative mood and to express relief tone after the wishes coming true.The Third Chapter is mainly on the syntactic distribution and combination of thesimilarities and differences between Ke and Cai: the distributed environments ofboth are roughly the same,but Cai doesn’t present in the imperative sentence;Ke is more apt to combinate with modal particles than Cai.We also summarizedsome of the commonly used sentence patterns and fixed structures of Ke andCai in this chapter.The Fourth Chapter focuses on a comparative analysis of pragmatics of Ke andCai.We compared the focuses and stresses of Ke and Cai.By studying on thespeakers’motivations and the evolutionary process of grammaticalization,here wecome to a conclusion that the subjectivity of Cai is much stronger than thesubjectivity of Ke. The last part of this paper summarized the content and pointed out the deficiencyof this article and the aspects that need further study.
