Nietzsche was the first to discuss the meanings of human’s body in the modernsociety.Fighting against with spirit, the perceptual body was released from the dichotomymanacle and join the activity of establishing human’s being and meaning, which made it ahabitual residence for one person.Bergson’s intuitivism, theories of phenomenology andDilthey’s human scientific epistemology pave the way of establishing a subjectivebody.Merleau-Ponty’s body phenomenology is a symbol of the beginning of subjectivebody in the modern world. However, the ensuing western late-modernism destroyed thesubjectivity of body.Instead, the desire of body was recognized and involved in thewhirlpool of material wants, thus damaging the existential individual. From where westand,a new muti-unitary idea of body should be accepted in the modern society and sharethe meaning of individual’s being. This essay is to put body in a long series and study the development of the bodyconnotation. We try to link body with individual existence and make some explanations tomodern discourse of body.In the preface, the relation between body and being issummarized and refined. We use Heidegger’s return(kehre)to describe the changes of bodyfrom modern to postmodern world.Meanwhile, the standard that is used to divide differentstages of body is also discussed in the preface. The first chapter is mainly aboutVico,Nietzsche and Feuerbach’s soma-aesthetics,who created the modern-narrative ofbody. The second chapter is mainly about Bergson,Husserl and Dilthey’ssoma-aesthetics,who destroyed the basis of dichotomy in theories. The third chapter ismainly about Merleau-Ponty,Scheler and pragmatism’s soma-aesthetics.Merleau-Ponty andScheler established the subjective body and the pragmatism had already begun to put upwith the idea of field. The forth chapter is mainly about postmodern soma-aesthetics suchas Lacan,Foucault who provide the possibility of reconstructing the body while destroyingits subjectivity. The concluding section is to analyze the relation between body and beingby introducing the concepts of present and absence in order to understand the plural states of body in the modern discourse, thus helping body connect with being in the modernsociety.
