"Communication", the common word we use in the daily life, is a general category of the relationship of people’s activities. Different academic disciplines have different emphasis of the understanding of communication. Marx, who saw the importance of communication, researched it as an important category of historical materialism. German Ideology, contains a lot of use of the "communication", serves as a major book that Marx explained his historical materialism. As an important component of communication, spiritual communication plays a vital role in the development of society. Is this category get involved in Marx’s Theory? If so, which aspects he had discussed about? It is very important for us to understand these theories so as to read Marx’s thoughts, as well as the current development of society.Based on Marx’s books, the historical materialism, and the concept of spiritual communication, this article first1) discusses the nature of spiritual communication is one of the contents that keep the existence and development of human being and society,(human being is the sum of certain kinds of communication while society is built during the process of material communication and spiritual communication);2) discloses the realization approach of people’s needs drives the spiritual communication. And those needs determine the degree and content of spiritual communication. The communications of the whole society become a complementary system. From those two points, we can see that the spiritual communication is a paraplastic form of mankind’s activity.Second, this article discusses several characters of spiritual communication like sociality, motility, and hereditability; language and character, two basic forms of spiritual communication, play an important role of the dissemination of culture and civilization. Meanwhile, as the development of science and technology, several new forms of spiritual communication generated (e.g. network communication).Next, the article explains the functions of spiritual communication like promotion and complementary, which facilitate the culture hybrid and the development of history.At last, this article depicts three social formations which produce the spiritual communication, and their interrelationships with spiritual communication.In sum, by explaining Marx’s idea about spiritual communication, we can understand, at the theoretical level, this kind of communication comprehensively and reveal its meaning to practical use.
