"Cun guan", or college graduates serving as village officers, has become widely accepted in China since1995. In March2008, the Central Organization Department, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security held a symposium requiring local governments to encourage college graduates to serve the rural areas. Since then, cun guan has entered the era of comprehensive development and more and more college graduates are selected to work in the countryside. How can the college graduates be adapted to the new position? How can they quickly master the skills needed for the rural environment and dealing with local people? How can they be comfortable with this role transition? This thesis answers the above questions by researching on cun guan’s social adaptation through archival sources and interviews with cun guan in Songling, Wujiang. Based on social adaptation theory, this research adopts observation, in-depth interviews, surveys, and literature reviews to identify reasons behind cun guan’s social inadaptation and proposes ways to improve through policy, management, social support and self-improvement of college graduates. This thesis includes five sections:1. Research background, significance, subject, methodology, definition and literature review.2. Based on the social adaptation theory, cun guan’s status quo through research on college graduates’ work environment, their adaptation to the environment, psychological adaptation, and cultural adaptation.
