The Mechanism Of Internet’s Impacts On Mass Incidents

In recent years, mass incidents begin to emerge in an endless stream. So it is necessary to dissect mass incidents theory. There are many mechanisms at work under the mass incidents. In all of the mechanisms, internet is a dynamic mechanism in the in the initiation and progression of mass incidents.Mass incident illustrates one of the social phenomena that are attention-gripping these years, while it’s called Social Movement or Contentious Actions in academic research. This article explains the generation mechanism of social movement. The emergence of social movement doesn’t occur overnight. It is the result of Long-term precipitation. Political Opportunities Structure is an important condition for social movement. Macroscopically speaking, Political Opportunities Structure mainly refers to the weakening of the national capacity to respond and the strengthening of the forces which contentious actions hold. At the micro level, Political Opportunities Structure includes other significant aspects as emotional, ideological, and social environmental. Political Opportunities Structure isn’t hard and fast. When the opportunities contribute to the mobilization and development of social movement, the opportunities would be called Political Opportunities Structure. Different countries have different Political Opportunities Structure. Based on its own political, economic, cultural backgrounds, China has a special Political Opportunities Structure.The Internet is a political opportunity.It can promote the emergence of social movements. Effect of the Internet on social movement is mainly manifested in three aspects:the first is the role of the internet to attract participants, the second is the role of the Internet in social mobilization, and the third the role of the Internet in the repertoires.Based on the analysis of the Internet and mass incidents and the exploration of the mechanism that internet cause during the social movement, this paper proposes some comments and suggestions which are separated from the government, society and technical aspects to improve the ability of government monitoring, early warning and disposal of mass incidents.
