Because of all kinds of reasons, when the Chinese Nationalist Governmentwas founded in1927,Tibet and Xinjiang had been got away from the centralgovernment for over10years. In order to change this situation and protect sovereignty, the Nationalist Government adopted some positive measures. A few of officials wereassigned to Tibet and Xinjiang to strengthen the contacts with them. The main pointof Tibet lay in two religious leaders and that of Xinjiang lay in Sheng shicai. Moreover, Britain had great influence over Tibet and the Soviet Union had greatinfluence over Xinjiang. During protecting Sovereignty, the Chinese governmentstruggled against Britain and the Soviet Union. However, because its strength of itselfwas so limited and China needed many aids from these two countries that theNationalist Government had to compromise with them. In spite of this, it is worthpraising the Chinese Nationalist Government for its protecting sovereignty over Tibetand Xinjiang. This text is divided into three chapters. The first chapter expoundscircumstances of Tibet and Xinjiang. The circumstances of Tibet mainly focus onrelations between Tibetan religious leaders, the Thirteenth Dalai lama and the NinthPanchen Erdeni, and the central government. It includes that two religious leadersrespectively strengthened the contacts with the central government and the centralgovernment sent officials to go to Tibet to pay homage on the demise of theThirteenth Dalai Lama, to preside the enthronement ceremony of the Fourteenth DalaiLama and to escort the Ninth Panchen to Tibet. The circumstances of Xinjiang mainlyfocus on Xinjiang being controlled by the Soviet Union. It includes that the localgovernment of Xinjiang secretly signed treaties with the Soviet Union so as to gettheir support and drove Britain out of Xinjiang. The second chapter elaborates theNationalist Government’s protection to the Sovereignty of Tibet and Xinjiang. Firstly,it struggled against Britain and the local government of Tibet because they preventedthe Nationalist Government building roads and they established a “Foreign Office”.With the support of the United Stated,“Tibet independence” was prevented partly.Secondly, with the outbreak of the war between the Soviet and Germany, Shengshicai decided to depend upon the Nationalist Government to firm his position in Xinjiang. The Nationalist Government grasped this golden opportunity to control Xinjiangfurther and forced him to leave Xinjiang. After the need in the Far East asked for bythe Soviet Union was fulfilled, the sovereignty of Xinjiang was protected finally. Thethird chapter mainly analyzes the reasons why there were different results inprotecting the sovereignty of Tibet and Xinjiang.
