Since Singapore’s founding in1959,the law has played an important role duringthis period which Singapore developed into a rich emerging industrial city state fromlack of industrial base and natural resource colony port city in just a few decades.Legal thought in Chinese traditional culture deeply affected the Singapore legalsystem. In the process of legal governance, Singapore’s thought legalists have strikingsimilarities with China’s legalism on the analysis of the human nature of good and evil,identification of the popular wisdom and attitude to the law; legal culture ofConfucianism is more focused on shaping the values of Singapore citizens andimpacting on essence of the rule of law. Singapore has formed the unique legalgovernance mode on the basis of the combination of Confucianism and legalism, it’scharacteristics shown in three aspects: demanding pursuit the formal rule of law,selectively preserve the essence of the rule of law, and Strong law instrumentalism.Adhering to laws governing model give a huge boost for rapid development ofSingapore, but also suffered a lot blame such as Singapore is not a country under therule of law and lake of democracy and human rights, such accusations sparked adebate over Singapore is ruled of man or law. In fact, the arguments can notfundamentally denied that Singapore has formed a unique oriental model of legalgovernance under combining the universal principles of western rule of law conceptwith local law resources. As a country like Singapore influenced by Chinesetraditional culture, the advanced idea and successful experience of construction of therule of law of Singapore has a certain reference value on our country’s modernizationconstruction of rule of law. We should attach importance to the native resource of ruleof law, make a different treating with the formal and the essence of the rule of law,ultimate people’s law-abiding awareness and behavior habits, then, explore a road torule of law with Chinese characteristics.
