Country park is an important part of urban green space, while there were few aesthetic quantitative assessments of the landscape. In terms of some theories and methods in landscape aesthetics and psychology, visual landscape quality was examined in this paper on condition that country parks outside the fifth ring road of Beijing were taken as the object of study. The model of landscape quality assessment was built and characteristics of country parks were emphasized in order to provide a reference for relevant researches. In view of the situation of present country parks at this location, some recommendations were made for construction in order that the beautification and recreation function were brought into fully play.Visual landscape quality was evaluated based on SBE method. Four parks were chosen for sample landscapes, including Jintian Park, Nanhaizi Park, Lvdi Park and Dongxiaokou Park. Field data was obtained by taking photographs and videos in each park.60photographs were selected for quality assessment.110undergraduates were invited to assess the landscape quality and finally100questionnaires were valid. The qualities of sample landscapes were sequenced after the data standardization was finished.SD method was used to assess landscape features.25typical photographs of different qualities were selected and then16features such as beauty, space were assessed by20landscape experts.The model of quality assessment was built through correlation and regression analysis. The relevance between landscape quality and landscape features was analyzed by SPSS17.0. The landscape features which were not significantly relevant with landscape quality would be deleted. Three kinds of regression analysis were used, containing backward, forward and stepwise. The results were compared and the judgment about collinearity among independent variables was completed. Based on the analyses above, principal component regression was used to construct the model of quality assessment.As a result, landscape elements were obviously different in the positive and negative photographs, such as vegetation, water, stone, pavement, buildings inside or outside the park. The effects of seven features in the model were notable. According to the influence coefficient, the ascending order was vitality, color richness, pleasure, beauty, naturalness, rural characteristics, and quietness. The park of the highest quality was Nanhaizi, followed by Jintian, Lvdi, and Dongxiaokou.As a conclusion, from the perspective of landscape elements, natural and artificial elements both affected landscape quality positively or negatively. From the perspective of landscape features, the effect of vitality was most prominent; color richness, pleasure, and beauty played a key role; naturalness, rural characteristics, and quietness had special significance because they could reflect the characteristics of country parks. There were some advantages of country parks outside the fifth ring road:their areas were large and so there was enough space for constructing water sceneries. At the same time, the vegetation was remarkable owing to the green-belt foundation. But three problems commonly existed:first, the colors of the parks were dull; second, the roads in the parks were excessively artificial; third, visual impact produced by tall buildings around the parks was obvious.
