Dan Kelly (or Daniel Urban Kiley,1912-2002), is the famous American landscape architecture master of20th century. As one of the three promoters of the "Harvard Revolution", he introduced modernism to the field oflandscape architecture, led to the changes in traditional landscape industry of America, and promoted the thelandscape architecture industry from tradition to modernism hardly. He has an important impact on the field ofmodern landscape architecture within the United States and the whole world. Therefore, to make a study of histhoughts could help us learn and understand the master’s design ideas and approaches of his successful works.In this paper, the writer introduced Dan Kiey’s life, education and work experience firstly, and furtherexplored the formation and development of his landscape architecture thoughts, thus expounded his designthoughts of " harmony with nature" systematically and illustrative. Then, the methods to express the modernistlandscape space and the use of design techniques of Dan Kiley were been analysed detailed. At the end of thepaper, the writer summarized the whole article.Dan Kelly has a profound understanding of Western classical landscape and modern space theory, and couldskilled expressed in his works. By using the western classical landscape elements, he could always build modernspace with rich feelings. And those were based on his thoughts and understanding on "harmony with nature ",which also made his works have a profound philosophical connotations.
