The health status and risk assessment of the overhead transmission line is of important practical significance to the grid safety, economic operation, as well as overhaul and technical. This paper put forward a new method of health status and risk assessment for the overhead transmission line by introducing the method of EA’s CBRM (Condition Based Risk Management) device status and risk assessment, which is based on local practice, combination of all factors that is affected the health status of equipment, and the principle of aging equipment in engineering. First, the basic information, fault information, experimental data and environmental information of the overhead transmission line is collected and quantified, the five components of the overhead transmission line and their state variables are divided, and then the process of the health status and risk for the overhead transmission lines is proposed. Secondly, by three methods, which are EA’s CBRM assessment system, comprehensive evaluation and analytic hierarchy process, is a health status and risk assessment model for the overhead transmission line built. And then the calculation parameters impacted results of the assessment in the model are analyzed and adjusted, which are consisted of reflecting the health status mechanical and electrical performance, adverse operating conditions record, repairing and maintenance records, and so on. Finally, the risk and health status of the tower and wire and earth wire consisted of the overhead transmission line is assessed. The health index of each tower, wire and earth wire within corresponding span of each tower are put out, as well as failure probability and risk value, above all verify this method is correct and feasible.
