During the dynasties of the Song, Jin and Yuan, Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii (qiang huo) is generally regarded as a bitter, sweet and slightly warm herb. There are14Chinese medical classics in the Ming dynasty, all of which recorded it is bitter and acrid, and of which six ones wrote it is sweet (of which two recorded Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii(qiang huo) with Radix Angelicae Pubescentis(du huo),5of these documents thought it is warm,7considered it is slightly warm. Almost all the17Chinese medical classics in the Qing dynasty recorded Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii (qiang huo) is bitter, acrid, warm, of which only three though it is sweet. Matching regularity and thought on clinical applicationFormulas recorded in medicinal cases, monographs or formula records were screened, classified and analyzed, which were used for the literature research of the actions and clinical application thinking of Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii(qiang huo). This part showed: excluded these modern actions with general recognition such as releasing exterior and dissipating cold, expelling wind and eliminating dampness, relieving pain. Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii(qiang huo) has more actions when being combined with other herbs, such as expelling pathogen, dispersing abscess, stopping convulsions, dredging channels, activating blood, dispersing stagnant fire, invigorating yang, soothing liver and ventilating lung.4. SummaryThe properties of Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii (qiang huo) is acrid, bitter and warm, which has strong smell. Its dispersing actions, such as releasing exterior, dissipating cold, expelling wind and eliminating dampness are often emphasized. The tendency produced by its properties is more frequently used than its real actions. So we need a comprehensive knowledge of property, which can guide flexible application in syndrome differentiation.
