They consider that misuse of cold drug is more secure than the misuse of heat drugs. However, the harm to patient is equally serious in clinical actually.Theoretical basis:As the not standardized medication clinically, Professor Xiao Xiangru suggested that the current popular exterior syndrome concept should be corrected to more accurately in clinical application. Professor Xiao with decades of theoretical research’s summary and clinical experience puts forward that the basic mechanism of exterior syndrome is that cold evil bound striae, and then Wei Qi stagnates so that can not warm body. That’s the reason of "chills" symptoms producing. So "chills" is the key point of identification exterior syndrome. The clinical treatment of exterior syndrome should strictly follow the rule of "have a cold, have an exterior syndrome". Professor Xiao also believes that the external wind heat syndrome is caused by warm heat pathogens, which Ye Tianshi had pointed out that warm heat evil attacking the lung first, so exogenous pathogenic warm heat causes lung heat syndrome, heat syndrome and Qif en syndrome. Because of exogenous damp heat syndrome has no cold evil to bound striae, so no aversion to cold symptoms. If it has aversion to cold, it is attack with cold evil on the basis of lung heat syndrome, which producing syndrome of superficies cold and interior heat.Methods:This study is based on the idea of The Xiao’s exterior syndrome differentiation and treatment, and to explore the current cold-pungent and diaphoretic drug’s essence and concept, and also to explore how to use them correctly in the clinic. The procedure can be divided into four steps:first, by consulting the related febrile works, analysis and summary of cold-pungent and diaphoretic drug’s concept formation, its formation’s period, secondly, look up the ancient herbal foundation, prescriptions and medical records, combined with the period of "cold-pungent and diaphoretic drug" concept formation, analysis and summary cold-pungent and diaphoretic drug’s, such as mint, Fructus Arctii, properties, prescription records and clinical medical use etc before and after this period, including the changes of drug properties from ancient times to the present, the kinds of disease’s treatment in the book, the medical observation of how ancient physicians is applied. Finally, combined with the concept of Xiao’s exterior syndrome differentiation and treatment, analyze cold-pungent and diaphoretic drug layer by layer, including the relationship between the drug’s properties and clinical application.Result:Through the research above, we can find that the cold and heat property of cold-pungent and diaphoretic drug, like mint and Fructus Arctii drug, is not clear; then analyze the causes why cold and heat property is not clear according to the records of books and consilia, and make sure that the taste of "cold-pungent and diaphoretic drug", such as mint and Fructus Arctii, is cold and pungent. Therefore the drug is not for relieving exterior syndrome, but for heat clearing. Those "cold-pungent and diaphoretic drugs" are light and floating and focus on the heat in the upper-jiao, such as lung heat and facial heat. On the one hand, the study analyzes and elaborates the intrinsic mechanism of how can cold-pungent and diaphoretic drug able to cure the beginning of the exogenous hyperthermia, on the other hand, it has a guiding significance to how to cure the exogenous disease clinically. It not only can correct the blind use of "cold-pungent and diaphoretic drug" clinically, but also can use them to cure the real interior heat syndrome and syndrome of qi system accurately and effectively.
