This thesis comprises of two portions, literature review and clinical study. The Chinese Medicine literature review summarises ancient text on the understanding of common cold and continual development of treatment according to pattern differentiation. It also looks into recent modern pharmacology research of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The Western Medicine literature review encompasses the understanding of viral upper respiratory syndrome, the current treatment principles and medicine. The clinical study is based on subjects collated in DongFang Hospital that meets the western medicine criteria of winter season viral upper respiratory syndrome. The study’s results are based on observations of the patients and recordings of the efficacy and safety of the treatment.Research objectiveThrough the use of Professor Zhou Ping An Jiebiaokangganheji formulae to treat wind-heat pattern of common cold, we aim to observe changes in the patients’ symptoms and signs, and clinical presentation to conclude its efficacy and thus assess the safety of the medicine.MethodologyThis study selects40patients throughout the period of March2013to March2014in the outpatient clinic of Dongfang Hospital. They meet western medicine diagnostic criteria of acute viral upper respiratory track syndrome, with temperatures ranging from37.1-38.6℃and TCM diagnostic of wind-heat pattern of common cold. According to1:1ratio, all patients were randomly divided into two groups, treatment and control group. With Jiebiaokangganheji as the medication for treatment group and Qingrejiedukoufuye as the control medication, the patients underwent a three day treatment period. After the treatment period, the results were compared for disease efficacy, syndrome efficacy, ease of main symptoms and laboratory results. Through these findings, we were able to determine the efficacy and safety of the Jiebiaokangganheji.Results1.Disease treatment efficacyThis study comprises of40patients,14male and26female subjects. The average age of the patients is40.95±14.558years old and the temperature range of the subjects is38.1-38.6^. the total treatment efficacy for treatment group is95%, while the total treatment efficacy of control group is95%(p<0.05). The superior treatment efficacy of the Jiebiaokangganheji is statistically significant.2.TCM treatment efficacyIn the comparison of treatment efficacy, both groups have total treatment efficacy at95%, the treatment group’s effective rate of90%is higher than the control’s group’s65%but is not statistically significant. Thus proving that both medications are effective in treatment and comparable.3. Efficacy against main symptomsIn the control of main symptoms of fever and chills, both medications have significant efficacy. The treatment group has significant improvement of95%, overall effectiveness100%while the control group has significant improvement of80%, overall effectiveness of95%. Both medications are significant in control of the main symptoms but the strength of Jiebiaokangangheji is not statistically significant. Two drugs reflect the fact that both Jiebiaokangangheji and Qingrejiedukoufuye can control the symptoms of a cold. Jiebiaokangganheji can effectively improve the feeling of heat resistance, the evil wind, head and pain, stuffy nose, runny nose, pharynx GanYan pain, symptoms of cough, dry mouth, thirst, difference was statistically significant, the sputum, sweat out confusing two symptoms without obvious curative effect4.Medication SafetyBased on the comparison of AST, ALT, CRE, UREA laboratory results before and after treatment, the changes in these values are not statistically significant. Thus showing that consumption of Jiebiaokangganheji and Qingrejiedukoufuye did not alter the laboratory values in the biochemical blood test, and that both medications are safe for consumption.ResultsJiebiaokangganheji is formulated based on the basic principles of TCM and modern pharmacology research. It is used in the treatment of viral upper respiratory tract syndrome and has the ability to expel wind, dispel heat, resolve toxins and soothe the throat. The clinical results have shown that this formula has rapid onset, effective in dispelling fever, stable and has significant efficacy against the symptoms of viral upper respiratory tract syndrome. However, Our clinical study count has limited subjects, thus will influence our clinical results, more subjects will be needed for more accurate results.
