This thesis main content and purpose is to introduce a perspective of adaptationof text to image by studying "Writers movie" of Alain Resnais, the leading director ofLeft Bank Group. The research methods are basing on the case studies of the film-Hiroshima Love and Last Year at Marienbad, to analyze the original novel works,scripts and the modes of adaptation from novels to movies, respectively. Thediscussion will also involve1) the original novel authors of Hiroshima Love and LastYear at Marienbad-Marguerite Duras and Alain Robbe-Grillet, who were directors ofLeft Bank Group as well, and2) the role that Alain Resnais played in theirtransformation from writers to directors after the cooperation with Alain Resnais.Consequently, it contributed to the understanding of the process and influence of themutual adaptation between literature and films of Left Bank Group directors, andmoreover, the continuation of Resnais individual style. First of all, in order to reach aconclusion that Alain Resnais style is "Writers movie", the research will start fromResnais magnum opus of Hiroshima Love and Last Year at Marienbad. Despite thescreenplays of Resnais were written by others, he successfully exhibited his individualstyle in the productions without exceptions. Secondly, from the perspective of therelationship of literature and films, specifically, the original novel authors ofHiroshima Love and Last Year at Marienbad-Marguerite Duras and AlainRobbe-Grillet, to arrive at a more explicit picture of how the adaptation of writings tofilms were done. Moreover, this is an important reason for the Left Bank Groupdirectors to win an unprecedented status in the history of French film. Lastly, wewould summarize that how Renais adapted his individual style in the screenplaysfrom others and his influence on Left Bank Group, and then reach theconclusion.Chapter One is an introduction and opening. After briefing the researchbackground, purpose and concurrent research progress in and aboard of theadaptation of literature and films by Renais, this chapter will debrief the researchmethod and content of the thesis, pointing out the creativeness and insufficiencies inconcerning researches.Chapter Two will emphasize on the study of the style of Renais Author Film,constituting the concept of stream of consciousness, the application ofnarrative space time and literal narratage respectively. The study of subjects is Renaisfilms, i.e Hiroshima Love and Last Year at Marienbad, to reach the conclusion of theindividual style of Renais.Chapter Three-with explicit positioning of the individualstyle of Renais, this chapter will in-depth analysis on,cooperating with Renais’ writer,Marguerite Duras and her script and adaptation of original novel of Hiroshima Lovewill be expanded, including the form of creation,writing content,to comprehendMarguerite Duras’ creative style,her relationship with literatures and films, and theinfluence of transformation after cooperation with Renais.Chapter Four-followingthe success of Renais Hiroshima Love, the Last Year at Marienbad by AlainRobbe-Grillet will be discussed in an orderly way similar to the analysis in ChapterThree. Basing on Last Year at Marienbad, Alain Robbe-Grillets Nouveau Roman andhis practice of adapting the Nouveau Roman into films after cooperation with Renaiswill be looked into. In addition, the formation and influence of Left Bank Groupdirectors style will also be summarized. Chapter Five plays as a conclusion andsummary of the thesis. It will present Renais, together with Left Bank Group whopracticed the adaptation of literature and films, as the milestone in the evolution ofthe literal feature of films. Suggestions on development of adaptation of literatureand films in China will be raised in the end.
