The Chinese word “lao” is a vital concept for traditional Chinese paintingindustry, this article starting with the meaning of “lao”, following the sense ofbugging truth by a variety of analyses from different aspects, and got the real meaningof “lao” in systemic ways. Through comparative study of “lao” and otheraesthetic categories such as “gu”、“zhuo”、“si nen”、“nen、“ying”、“shu”、“pingdan”，the article conduct an deep、systematic discussion on the meaning of “lao”.From the painting creation，evaluation criteria, style, the artist cultivation focusingon investing “lao” in different aspects， to reveal the rich connotation and the value of“lao”in theory of Chinese painting.
