Turgenev And Shaping The Image Of Women

Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev was an outstanding realistic writer in Russia during19thcentury, whose works accurately grasp the pulse of the times, promptly reflect the changesin society, and truly show the nature of humanity. His six novels were known as “Russiansocial chronicle” in the middle of19th century. In his works, a group of unique femaleimages was created, known as “Turgenev’s ladies”. However, the accurate classificationand position of this group has not been defined by the academic. Therefore, in this paperthe female images in Turgenev’s works is taken as research subjects, as well as the reasonsof creating female images by Turgenev as the main content, and from a new viewpoint thefemale images will be analyzed by reading original texts and literature on the basis oforiginal research results.Five chapters, including an introduction, three chapters and the conclusion areincluded in this paper.First of all, research situation of this topic in this paper is summarized and theresearch method, purpose and meaning are pointed out in the introduction.In Chapter Ⅰ, female images are divided into four categories by their attitude tolove: female image willing to self-sacrifice; female image not willing to abandon materiallife; female image bravely taking action; female image not willing to change. Their growthenvironment and the forming process of different type of female images are analyzed, aswell as the reason they make such decisions.In Chapter Ⅱ, the reasons of images’ creation by Turgenev are analyzed on threeaspects, such as religion and philosophy, historical background and personal experience,willing to find the archetypes of the female images.In Chapter Ⅲ, the creation of female images is investigated by physical andpsychological descriptions, and the description approaches on female images by Turgenevare analyzed.In the end, the summary of sections above is made, from a more comprehensiveoverview to generalize the female images in Turgenev’s works, obtain the motives andcauses on Turgenev’s creation and sum up the salient features of Turgenev’s descriptionfrom the point of view of artistic techniques.
