Hong Kong people in general can speak foreign language, but the knowledge about the Chinese traditional culture is inadequate. As Hong Kong was under the British control, the atmosphere to place higher value to Western than Chinese also affects composition. The former is relatively loyal to the tradition, more conservative, the latter applied more Western composition techniques, their works are more creative. Mr. Yau Sau Bun’s composition lies between both side, he can retain the traditional element, and innovative, mixing the traditional, modern, Chinese and Western technique altogether.Chinese music ensemble "Qi" contains more modern style in the works of Mr. Yau.
