In the modern history of China, the Chinese people experienced a complicatedprocess of cognizing Russia, in which Zhang Ximan played an important role.As a famous social activist in China’s modern history, Zhang was active in thepolitical and cultural arenas in China’s Republican period, and was among theforerunners that disseminated Marxism in China. He paid great attention to Russia,having his heart filled with love for the Soviet Union. It is Zhang who first advised SunYat-sen to adopt the so-called "Three Policies", advocating allying with the SovietUnion to fight against Japan. In order to get the Chinese people acquainted with theSoviet Union better, he actively introduced and widely publicized the Soviet Union tothe common Chinese people through a Sino-Soviet cultural association he founded. Allhis life, Zhang explored the paths to China national salvation and to a stronger China,while combining this career tightly with promoting Sino-Soviet cooperation.Zhang’s excellent activities promoted Chinese citizens to have a deeper cognitionon Russia, thus making a considerable contribution to building a positive image ofRussia.In this paper based on rich first-hand information, the author elaborates Zhang’ssocial and cultural activities aimed at cognizing Russia and building the Russian image,whereas he has pointed out Zhang’s misunderstanding of the Soviet Union and thedrawbacks in his description of the Russian image.The full text consists of five parts, that is, the abstract, preface, main body, notesand reference. The main body is made up of four parts: Chapter One, which elaboratesthe forming process of the Russian image under Zhang’s description, Chapter Two,which elaborates Zhang’s activities in framing and spreading the Russian image,Chapter Three, which discusses the positive effects and the limitations of Zhang’sdescription of the Russian image, and Chapter Four, the author’s conclusion.
