Ernest Boyer who is one of the great American educators, redefined thesignificance of scholarship and creatively proposed “the scholarship of teaching” so asto solve the inclination that the American university paid more attention on universityacademic utilitarian and scientific research rather than teaching. Boyer’s thought ofthe scholarship of teaching greatly enriched the traditional academic connotations, hasgreat significance to promote the professional development of university teachers. Itrationalized the relationship between teaching and research, unified teaching andresearch from a new perspective. There is the same inclination in the field of ourhigher education, so it is importance to learn the theory of Boyer’s thought of thescholarship of teaching in order to promote Chinese university English teachers’professional development.Based on department in university, the “department-based research” providesthe self-reflection, colleagues’ cooperation and professional guidance to collegeEnglish teachers. Here teachers not only solve the problems in their daily teachingpractice which can be developed to research plan and result, but also use the researchresults to improve their teaching.This study designed the questionnaire “college English teachers’ teaching andresearching development”, in order to fully find out the implementation of theteaching and research activities in different department, and the impact on collegeEnglish teachers’ teaching and researching development. The author selected fivedepartments in Xi’an International Studies University, provided questionnaire andinterviews. The aim is to find the problems in the current college English teachers inthe professional development of the teaching, academic, training and so on. Finally,proposed the establishment of “department-based research” which can propose aneffective platform to promote college English teachers’“teaching and researching”professional development strategies.
