Zhang Wei, a Chinese contemporary writer, has insisted on serious literature for decade years, also is a controversial writer. In2011, he was awarded "The Maodun Prize in literature" for his ten-volume novels "You are on the highland", which reflected the affirmation of the literary world to him."You are on the highland" is a "long walk book", which tells a story of a spiritual orphans’ roaming experience."Roving" is a theme of this series of novels. Though this subject, Zhang shows us a road that describes an intellectual’s tireless dedication to the pursuit of his own spiritual ideal, also with various experiences, hard struggle, intense and complex emotion, serious historical thinking and stubborn sense of value. From the perspective of thematic analysis, with "Roving" as a starting point and the constant roaming as key elements, this paper deeply studies and elaborates the theme of this series of novels. Analysis and research of this subject is of great significance. First of all, roaming implies Zhang’s thinking of contemporary living conditions, reflecting people lose and their spiritual value option in the period of social transition, so it makes this subject have profound social content and representative characteristic of the times. In addition, facing kinds of contradictions and problems, Zhang dedicated to stick to the moral ideal as an intellectual, seeking to rebuild home of the human spirit. The "Roving" theme reflects Zhang’s seeking, perplexed and introspective soul, but also his inevitable choice in contemporary social. In the materialistic and anomie society, this maverick gives us more thinking and the courage to resist the reality intrusion.Chapter I of this paper is the introduction, mainly introduces the background significance and the present research status of this topic. Chapter II mainly analyzes manifestations of picaresque sensation in the works. Considering the family blood heritage, history and the reality, in Chapter III, the reasons for his "Roving" is analyzed. Chapter IV analyzes Zhang’s three choices for roving:integration into wild, reshaping history and striking to plateau, and inevitably each of the three will be a desperate tragedy. Then comes the conclusion:roving is just process rather than a result for Zhang and the characters in his novels and they embark on a no-ending journey. It is a journey seeking for freedom, a self-redemption journey for intellectuals, and it has practical significance for contemporary mental construction. So In Chapter V, significance of roving is elaborated. Confusion, roving and seeking, constantly cycle, Zhang tells us a Sisyphus myth for generations of intellectuals, and their pursuit is fabulously tragic and fascinating.
