Implications Of Nanyang Jade Carving Pattern Decoration

Nowadays, with the fast development of science, many traditional handicraft technologies have been replaced by large-scale machine manufacturing. However, the feature of "solidity and fragileness" of jade places a decisive role on the inherent and stable property of jade carving. Jade is the typical representative of traditional Chinese culture and the beauty of its form and patterns are closely related to human life. For thousands of years, our ancestors have created enormous propitious patterns which reflect people’s pursuit of happy life, integrate working people’s habits for appreciation and embody their kind and unsophisticated thoughts. People are delighted to hear and see these propitious patterns and pass them down from generation to generation. However, while buying jade product, modern people pay more attention to its value and position symbol, neglecting its propitious meaning.The present thesis sets focus on the carving art of Nanyang jade. It first makes a generalization for the readers to have a basic understanding by introducing the origin, species as well as current development of Nanyang jade. Then it analyses the manufacturing feature and overall ornamentation of jade processing in details. To provide a more direct representation of these features and ornamentation, this thesis adds some examples to the illustration. Meanwhile, the thesis introduces propitious designs of traditional jade carving based on the manufacturing features and moulding patterns, and makes a detailed analysis on its implications with the patterns. Finally, the present thesis puts forward some constructive suggestions on the problem that traditional culture is neglected and attaches new life and soul to jades to make them inherited and developed.
