Most of the studies on Shi Tiesheng’s works deal with the topics of life philosophizing, religious feelings, existentialism poetics. An overall and systematic interpretation of his works on the imagery, thematic implication from the perspective of intertextuality is nowhere to be found. This thesis attempts to read his works from intertextuality, an idea in the Contemporary Western Postmodernism to study cross referencing in his texts. By exploring this intertextual phenomenon the writer, on one hand, discusses the intertextual relationship between Shi Tiesheng’s fiction, poetry,"quasi-screenplay" and prose to get closer to the meanings of the texts while reading; on the other hand, points out the referencing of Shi Tiesheng’s works with the Bible, mythology, ancient Greek mythology to extended its connotations to the original sin, suffering, Process Philosophy, and love. This thesis consists of introduction, three body chapters and conclusions. The introduction of the paper gives a brief review of researches of Shi Tiesheng’s works and combs the development of the theory of "intertextuality". Then the significance of this study is pointed out.Chapter one grasps the intertextual phenomenon in Shi Tiesheng’s works in general. The writer discusses the intertextual phenomenon of Shi Tiesheng own works of fiction, poetry,"quasi-screenplay" and prose. In addition, intertextual phenomenon of Shi Tiesheng’s works and the "before the text" is touched upon. Finally, an analysis of the reasons for the generation of intertextuality in his works is presented.Chapter two analyzes Shi Tiesheng’s article by "imagery" in a microscopic level and clarifies that imageries with similar aesthetic factors is complex codes of his works. The interlinked symbolic meaning in the article constitutes huge imagery groups, such as survival imagery group, hindrance imagery group and death imagery group. With the guide of intertextuality we can understand its profound meanings.Chapter three analyzes Shi Tiesheng’s article by "theme" in a macroscopic level with an eye on the deep spiritual principles imbedded in the articles. By the intertexual referencing of Shi Tiesheng’s works to Job prototype we can experience Shi Tiesheng’s acceptation of sufferings on the "road" of God and human. Then the writer makes an interpretation of his unique understanding of "life" by the intertextuality with Sisyphus Prototype. Finally, by the intertextual referencing of the prototype of Adam and Eve the writer gives an explanation of Shi Tiesheng’s understanding of "original sin" and " original disease", namely that everyone has a limitation within himself, spiritual or physical, even secondary, which should be surmounted by the redemption of love and the pursuit of truth. It is pointed out in the conclusion that life is the original. What comes of importance is what truth to pursue and how to live a life. A writer as Shi Tiesheng can get the meaning of life and the value of life along this road. On this basis, it is pointed out that under the guidance of the theory of intertextuality, it can be read that Shi Tiesheng’s creation is directional to the spirit of contemporary novels.
