This thesis employs the statue named Mahākāla in Baocheng Temple (Ziyang Hill ofWushan scenic,Hangzhou,Zhejiang) as the subject of research, this Mahākāla statue of cavetemple dated1322, it is so far the only one Mahākāla in Tibetan Buddhism which has specificInscription of Yuan Dynasty in China. The purpose of the research is to clarify three aspects:history of research and discovery, iconography and the study on patron.(1) Introduction to the history of academic research on Baocheng Temple. As a culturallandscape,Baocheng temple and the statues have been long-term concerned,there are manydetailed records from Ming Dynasy, some archaeological records from1950’s and abundantacademic research from1980’s which are reliable.(2) Comparing with some other cultural relics, which both in published books and catalogues.Confirming that the Mahākāla of Hangzhou is the Mahākāla Panjarnata (the Lord of Pavilion,Gur gyi mgon po in tibetan),which is one of the major Protector of Law and demon-subduingdivinity of Sa-skya school of Tibetan Buddhism so as to claim that the statues of Baocheng templealso has its unique style.(3) Through historical research, the patron most likely is General Bo Jianu, whose nameappeared in the inscription engraved in the cave in Baocheng Temple, Yuan Dynastry.
