Most of Yan Geling’s novels are focused on depicting tragedy; suffering is the main theme of the creation. The main content of her novels is a combination of many parts:the purgatory of bitterness and painfulness, the puzzle of love and life, the struggle of individual fate and the turbulent situation, and also the intertwinement between ethics of human nature and national politics. Writers never evade sufferings, however, sometimes even make exaggeration, he uses sufferings, which can make readers feel the powerfulness of life and the tough will of the subject, to begin his writing to show the beauty and the power of human will. Different from other cross-culture writers, Yan’s novels are not focused on the cultural identity crisis or cultural identity conflicts. Writers show their worries about the lost of human nature. Strictly speaking, sufferings in Yan’s novels are not a metaphysical inquiry, but an esteem of human life.As a compassionate writer, Yan’s novels are not just for criticism or accusation, but on the basis of individual life’s understanding and ecumenical lament. To release the force of suffering and the pain of life, the author creates many true nature; lenient and kind images of women, their body flash the life power which can ease suffering and save the lives of others and themselves. However, redemption cannot fundamentally eliminate suffering. Faced with abundant sufferings of the real world, the author calls on people to go beyond the bondage of suffering, seeks the dignity of life and the freedom of mind, and looks for spiritual homeland of material age. From the different themes of Yan Geling’s novels, this essay tries to understand the author’s thought about the suffering of mankind and the exploration of its beyond under the different culture and era background. This essay is divided into three parts:Part One:Misery narrative--facing the survival plight. Based on different cultural environment, historical background of life memory and experience, Yan Geling’s novels can be divided into three parts according to the author’s different creative subjects:the suffering of historical memory, the suffering of present real life and the suffering in the foreign life, which is to explore the connotation of their novels.Part Two:Misery Redemption--grubbing life energy. Yan Geling reveals the human suffering, at the same time; she looks for the path of redemption. Author will redeem the hope in the natural simplicity, lenient and kind women, who sacrifice themselves, treat human beings. They can also get self soul redemption in the process of saving others.Part Three:Misery Transcendence-finding the spiritual homeland. Redemption cannot eliminate the force of suffering from the essence. Faced with abundant and heavy sufferings, author tries to dig from the internal, through the confirmation of the life dignity, the pursuit of spiritual freedom, the persistence of ideal and faith, to look for spiritual homeland in the future.
