Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Russia, as the successor, has alwaysbeen trying to find a diplomatic way to redeem its lost glory and taking theAsia-Pacific region as one of the preferential areas of its diplomatic strategy gradually.As an important international organization of the Asian-Pacific region, ASEAN hasbeen very successful in enrolling new member states and deepening regionalcooperation since it’s foundation in1976, which makes it a model of cooperation ofsmall and weak countries and therefore get the attention of Russia.Russia strengthened the cooperation with ASEAN through two times of Russia-ASEAN Summits. But it’s worth noting that although ASEAN is an internationalorganization as a whole, its ten member states do have very different political systemsand levels of economic development, together with the principle of non-interference,making the integration of ASEAN limited in many ways. As a result, the cooperationbetween Russia and ASEAN is more likely implemented with its ten member statesseparately. The rapid development of the relationship betweenRussia and ASEAN takes an important part in the Southeast Asia region, makingwhich place become a miniature of the competition of foreign strategy and interestsamong large nations in the globalization background.
