Due to the constant deepening reform and opening up and the unceasingly deepen market economy, minority groups is gaining a wider foothold in urban areas. Its population is becoming larger and ethnic communities for the minorities gradually take shape, and even communications among different minorities are found to be growing. However during their adapting to the urban life, different economic interests, traditional cultures and diverse folkways of minorities has added to more ethnicity-related conflicts and contradictions, especially in such basic unit in cities as called community. Hence standing out the ethnic relations among communities in cities as one of the most prominent problems of special concern. Therefore, a new question of ethnic relations in cities shows up as to how to handle ethic relations among minorities and those between minority and the Hans. This paper, in the perspective of Marxist Nationality Theory, combines ethnic relations in the research of the National Theory with a notion belonging to research of sociology, ethnic community, to research into ethnic relations of ethnic communities in urban areas. With this, a city-featured ethnic community is conjured up accordingly out of the establishment of harmonious ethnic relations in urban settings. This paper chooses two ethnic communities in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province-Ximianqiao Community in Jiangxi Street, Wuhou district, Chengdu City and Community of Studies for Mongolian and Manchu, an ethnic community with a special form-as the subjects investigated. Survey research is especially adopted to collect data. By the following statistical analysis of these data and the document study, various social conducts, social relations and other social phenomena are discussed and analyzed to introduce the fundamental state of ethnic community, the status quo of ethnic relations and their influential factors. Of all these factors, our special attention is paid to the multi-dimensional analysis of the following five factors-political factors (including national cadre, international factors and media elements), economic factors, cultural factors (including their folkways, religious beliefs and their languages), factor of interethnic marriages and of residential pattern and its floating population. And this will be followed by our suggestion and countermeasures to the reasonable building of harmonious ethnic relations in Chengdu City.Community, a basic unit of cites, has its irreplaceable function in the process of urban development, and being the joint of various ethnicity-related conflicts and contradictions, community cannot deny its position as the black spot of urban ethnic relations. So study on ethnic relations among ethnic communities finds its special value in easier building of harmonious ethnic relations in urban settings, in stronger safeguarding urban security and development and also in wider guaranteeing the lawful rights and interests of the minority peoples, and ultimately it will work to be a promotion to the consolidation and enhancement of socialist ethnic relations of equality, solidarity and mutual assistance and will inevitably aid our proper access to prosperity and progress enjoyed by all our ethnic groups who will work in unison and live in harmony ever since.
