The concept of populism has appeared for a long time.it’s a kind of political ideological trend,a kind of social movement,or a kind of cultural mentality with the history of recurrent.In the different historical development, Populism has presented different characteristics.In recent years,the technology of new media has emerged.it’s a new kind of technique experience that is different from the traditional media.its characteristics of openness, equality, interaction has broken the line between the communicator and the receiver under the perspective of traditional media and has broken the constraints of the time and space. It has provided a convenient channel for citizens to speech and provided effective protection for the realization of civil discourse democracy.New media environment has brought the new development of the populism.it has presented a very different situation in the context of the new media.Study on the populism’s characteristics in the context of the new media can provide a new perspective to the research of communication and promote the process of the populism research.This article under the premise of combing the populism’s related changes in the context of the new media,try hard to explore the characteristics of populism in the context of the new media,adopt the method of case analysis.through in-depth analysis on the three typical cases:the "yao event","Yang assaulting case","the Harbin police kill college students" event,extracted the unique characteristics of populism in the context of the new media:First,a flood of grassroots power, Second, the polarization of group opinion,Third, highlight of the social criticism consciousness.Finally summed up the populism’s positive effects and negative effects in the context of the new media.positive effects mainly showed as:First,social supervision:a constraint to the elite and authority, second, the discourse democracy:the attention to the vulnerable groups.negative effects mainly showed as:First,group polarization:the inundation of public opinion information, second, the judicial intervention:justice disturb and damage.Through the above analysis and summary,in order to provide certain reference significance for the populism’s research in the field of communication.
