Nicaragua, as the biggest country of the central America, its political status in the world didn’t stand out at first. People were not eager to dig this convenient passage until someone suggested building a canal which could connect the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, especially when the California gold rush began in1848, after which Nicaragua became the target of the great powers. Among all those powers, the United States regarding the Caribbean area as its backyard, shown deep interest in this "Exotic flowers in the back garden".Since the end of the19th century, the United States has constantly taken such powerful policies to this area as "a big stick policy" and "dollar diplomacy " which were shown to the extreme. The United States interfered the domestic and foreign affairs of Nicaragua by all means; especially in1912the United States interfered the Nicaragua civil war publicly and even sent the USMC (the United States Marine Corps) to Nicaragua; generally speaking, the United States seized the rights of Nicaragua through a series of treaties. In the late of1920s, because of the changes at home and abroad as well as the background of releasing the relationship with the Latin America, finally, the United States accomplished the changes in the diplomatic policy to Nicaragua through the common efforts of president Coolidge, Hoover. My thesis focuses on the history of the relationship between the US and Nicaragua, exposes the nature of the American policy and analyzes its effects on Nicaragua.
