The culture of WuShu has a very long history. In the long term of learning andstudying, we found that we are so unsubstantial in the study of the history of WuShuinstruments and ideas. After consulting and searching the author found that there arerelatively fewer monographs about WuShu instruments, especially about theinstruments--cudgel. Our research in WuShu is not only to study the cudgel, but alsoits deeper cultural significance; not only its function, but also its value in usage.This essay deeply studys the development and cultural features of the cudgelthrough historical materials, investigation on the spot, interview of experts, holisticapproach, aiming at enhance people’s understanding towards the cudgel, especially itscultural significance, also encourage and enlighten further research towards WuShuculture.The article makes the developing process of cudgel clearer, getting the relationshipbetween cudgel and the five instruments as well as its position in skill in wielding the18kinds of weapons. It also presents the relationship of Sheng and Ke in the fiveelements through their interaction and states its military value. It makes the content ofWuShu more and more complete and perfect continually as well as leads to thechanges in the forms of WuShu instruments. We can see that the Buddhists take thecudgel as arms with compassion in the two famous history events in Shaolin Temple;cudgels is made well-known through saving the King of Tang Dynasty and fightingagainst the Japan invaders; they gradually consolidate the advantages of cudgels inthe process of communicating and learning with the outside world later. Through thevivid description of the two famous works, on the one hand it presents the rise andwidely use of the cudgels as arms; on the other hand it expresses people’s beautifulwishes by artistic dealing and historic effects of diversity of culture by theintroduction of its ramification. The evolution and improvement of Nunchakus makescudgels step out of China and advance to the world, in some way, it’s an advocate andenlightenment of Chinese WuShu culture. It also symbolizes a breakthrough in theimprovement of Chinese WuShu instruments. There are many forms of cudgels with unique features. Nowadays the cudgel isplaying an important role in its own field, forming a unique Chinese cudgel culture.They are not the weapons in war or the instruments in WuShu any longer. This essaysuggests that some relevant departments pay more attention to WuShu culture. Themajor part of protecting the WuShu should be excavating the technology, realizingtechnical value of traditional WuShu. The people who learn WuShu should absorb thehistorical experience and realize that the exploration to the WuShu can’t just stop inthe level of researching the technology, but take history as a mirror to further explorethe cultural connotation.
