The process of the second language acquisition is a very complex process,involving many related factors, and we know the students’ second languageacquisition is closely linked to the classroom; teaching is a series of communicationprocess of imparting knowledge of the teachers and students’ learning.“Thesuccessful communication is the key to the success of classroom teaching”(Wiemann,1975:54). Also teachers play an active leading role and goodcommunication means the good effect, so teachers’ verbal and nonverbal behaviorsare the two most important communicative approaches in the classroom. On one hand,they impart knowledge to students, on the other hand, they convey a lot ofinformation, so what influence do the teachers’ nonverbal behaviors affect on thesenior high school English teaching? Two English teachers and112students fromJiangxi Sui Chuan Middle School were investigated through questionnaires. With thehelp of video observation and interviews, the two teachers and some students werestudied from the perspective of nonverbal behaviors. This paper used SPSS16.0todeal with the data. And the purpose is to find the relationship between students andteachers, besides the classroom atmosphere, students’ classroom participation and theconnection between the students’ cognitive learning were discussed. The researchresults were stated as following. Firstly, teachers’ nonverbal behaviors had greatinfluence on the classroom atmosphere. Secondly, teachers’ nonverbal behaviors andstudents’ classroom participation had a close relationship between the students’cognitive learning. Thirdly, there were a lot of negative non-verbal behaviorscontributing to the teaching effect. Fourthly, although some realized the importance ofnonverbal behaviors, they failed to control their nonverbal behaviors. ThereforeEnglish teachers should pay attention to the nonverbal behaviors, and adjust theirclassroom non-verbal behaviors to improve the teaching efficiency.
