The shortage of children with moderate to severe mental retardations cognitive ability and the limitation of their initiative communication ability have great effects on their confidence and social interaction. The researcher elects to use he prompt system in the natural environment to improve the initiative communication behaviors of children with moderate to severe mental retardation.The research adopts A-B-C withdrawal design, a single-subject experimental design. The subjects include one child with moderate to severe mental retardation who is come form Chongqing normal university. Independent variable is the prompt system in the natural environment, while dependent variable is times of initiative communication behaviors for children with moderate to severe mental retardation. Data analyzed by visual analysis, C statistics and the effects of other observational data, as well as the social validity of the interview data were also analyzed. The results of the research are as follows:1. The prompt system in the natural environment improved the times of initiative communication behaviors of children with moderate to severe mental retardation.2. The prompt system in the natural environment developed the times of eye-contact communication behaviors of children with moderate to severe mental retardation.3. The prompt system in the natural environment reduced the times of exceptional communication behaviors of children with moderate to severe mental retardation.4. The prompt system in the natural environment also had other effects on children with moderate to severe mental retardation, such as improving their ability of frustration endurance, and understanding of communication, and their confidence in communication behaviors, and the waiting time during interactive communication, as well as the acceptable behaviors5. The effects of the prompt system in the natural environment gain supports from teachers and parents.
