The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of milieu teaching on spontaneous communication behaviors and exceptional communication behaviors to an elementary student with severe intellectual disabilities. The research adopts A-B-A’ withdrawal design, a single -subject experimental design. One elementary school student with severe intellectual disabilities joined in this study,who shows exceptional communication behaviors during interaction with others.Visual analysis and C statistic were used to evaluate the effects of milieu teaching on the subjects in terms of spontaneous and exceptional communication behaviors.In addition, the effects of other observational data, as well as the social validity of the interview data were also analyzed.The results of this study are as follows:1.The numbers of spontaneous communication behaviors of the tested subjects was increased with milieu teaching.2.The numbers of exceptional communication behaviors was decreased with milieu teaching.3.The effects of milieu teaching gain supports from teachers and parents.4.Milieu teaching also had other effects on children with severe intellectual disabilities:improvements on the willingness of active communication,and the frustration endurance,and the waiting time during interaction and relations with other students and their parents.
