Ever since the early1990s, large groups of migrant workers have been providing labor to support the industrialization and urbanization of the middle and eastern part of China. The household migration gradually becomes the major form chosen by migrant workers. The migration changes the dwelling environment, living condition and people-to-people relation of the rural families, and it also lead to the vicissitude of the patriarchy, the traditional dominant power in rural families. However, the vicissitude of household pattern combines the traditional and modern process of deconstruction, instead of demonstrating the traditional one only as the assumption in the theory of family modernization, and patriarchy also continues and reconstructs in this process of vicissitude. Compared with those traditional families fix at one place, the particular conditions of migrant families lead to the diversity of their patriarchy.Starting with the research on the migration of women as well as the continuity and reconstruction of patriarchy in their lives, this thesis attempts to explore the elements and driving power which lead to the vicissitude of patriarchy. The research focuses on the living conditions been experienced by two women, one living in the traditional pattern with fellow villagers, and another in the pattern of nuclear family. It is found that the two different living patterns of migrant families are formed by multiple elements, including their living habits, living condition, people-to-people relation, the affection between the couple, division of labor, decision making, and children’s education. And these two living patterns are closely tied to the form of the domination of patriarchy in these families. Different domination forms also decide the living conditions of the women in migrant families. The thesis would also cover the analysis of the following issues:What are the specificities of the vicissitude of patriarchy? What is the new connotation of the changing domination of patriarchy? Whether individualization and subjectivity of the women bring about happy and stable family life? And whether the experience and attitude of women in their own lives go in line with the requirements of women’s empowerment?...
