Personality, Social Comparisons Impact Of Regret - The Result Of Various Methods Under Comparison

Regret is one of the most common emotions in our daily life which every one would experience. It is a kind of emotions that’s about decisions. Around us, there are some people who always remember their decision or selection even in their old days. But there are other man who never regret or has light regret. We think this different has a relationship with personality.People live in society, whatever realizes or not, social comparison is always there.When people make comparisons, regret is coming. So social comparison may have some effects on regret. What is the relationship among regret、personality and social comparison? Three studies in this thesis are used to explore the relationship among these variables in college students.This thesis contained three parts.Study1, some questionnaires were used to collect the intensity of regret, the college students’personality and their social comparison. Independent-samples T test was used to evaluate three variables in college students. The results showed that significant difference was found between gender in regret, personality and social comparison. At the same time, the difference was also found among grade in regret. Structural Equation Model was used to investigate the influenced personality and social comparison to the regret. The result was, Psychoticiam and Neuroticism have influence on regret and social comparison positively and were adjusted by social comparison. Extrovision had no salience influence on regret, but it had positive influence by social comparison. So, social comparison mediated the relationship between personality and regret partly.Study2, we used scenario experiment and compile situation questionnaire to get the strength of regret. They were instructed to read the scenario as if it were actually real. Different comparison directions are included. Hierarchical Regression Analysis told us that two types of personalities had influence on regret and are adjusted by social comparison just as study1.Psychoticiam had negative effect on regret and social comparision, and Neuroticism had influence on regret and social comparison positively. Extrovision had no salience influence on regret and social regret. Social comparison mediated the relationship between personality and regret. However, this mediatorial effect was partially. Study3, participants performed a simple task manipulated with three feedbacks in real situation on computes, in order to investigate the regret in different directions of social comparison. The results were:correlate test find that there almost no relation between variables. Just found that the relation between extrovision and social comparison was significant. Down-social comparison would forecast regret in some degree. By the way, in study3, Structural Equation Model was not used.
